Balicore Construction is proud to have delivered the Dominion Energy Marine Coordination Center, marking our first mass timber structure and a major milestone for the company. Located at Fairwinds Landing in Norfolk, Virginia, this project showcases a forward-thinking approach to construction in support of Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind initiative.
Mass timber is an emerging building method in the U.S., recognized for its structural performance, sustainability, and modern aesthetic. By leveraging this technology, Balicore delivered a state-of-the-art facility that stands apart from traditional steel and concrete construction.
Built on Collaboration
This project required a high level of coordination and adaptability. Operating under a contract model similar to a design-build partnership, all stakeholders worked in alignment under the Owner. With design evolving throughout construction, success depended on strong communication, flexibility, and proactive problem-solving.
Overcoming Unique Challenges
Mass timber introduced several complexities that required strategic planning and execution:
Early delegated design and procurement to maintain schedule
International sourcing of timber components from Austria
Extensive material protection planning to prevent damage from handling and weather
Continuous coordination as the design developed in real time
Through disciplined execution, the team successfully navigated these challenges while maintaining project momentum.
Building for the Future
This project reflects Balicore’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Mass timber not only reduces environmental impact but also creates a warm, modern environment for occupants while enhancing the surrounding community.
The Marine Coordination Center stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, adaptability, and forward-thinking construction.
At Balicore, we continue to push boundaries, embracing new technologies to deliver projects that leave a lasting impression, constructed on relationships and excellence.
